Let the sun shine
Ryan Higgins of Grand Junction fills a seed box in preparation for planting corn May 6. Higgins, whose seed of choice was a Latham Hi-Tech Hybrids variety, was eager to get to the fields in Greene County after numerous delays caused by persistent cool, wet weather. Forecasters say temperatures will remain below normal through May 13 (along with several chances for rain). Livestock farmers are also watching this spring’s planting progress very closely. On average, nearly a third of state’s corn crop and a fourth of the soybeans harvested in Iowa are used for livestock feed.

Dispelling food cost myths
The Jointherideiowa.com site on the Iowa Farm Bureau Web page has been updated to help address the growing concern about higher food costs and the role of biofuels. The site includes a “myth buster” section that helps dispel misinformation that biofuels are driving up consumer food prices and other articles that shed light on this debate. In addition, the site includes the “Food vs. Fuel Challenge,” a quiz that helps consumers uncover the facts about biofuels.

Biofuels helping
The increase in the production of biofuels is saving American drivers as much as 40 cents on each gallon of gasoline they purchase at the pump, a new Iowa State University (ISU) study shows. The biggest impact, the study showed, was in the Midwest. The study, released last week by ISU’s Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, showed that from 1995 through 2007, ethanol saved consumers significant amounts of money, which came at the expense of petroleum refiners’ profits.
